Position: Group Accountant
Department: Finance
Reporting to: Financial Reporting Manager

TEAM DESCRIPTION
Channel 4’s Finance department acts as a trusted advisor to the business, supporting and informing decision making through insightful analysis, expert opinion and timely and accurate reporting. We aim to efficiently and effectively ensure the sustainability of Channel 4 through a strong system of financial control and compliance. 

The Group Accountant role will sit in the Financial Control team, which:
  • Works with all areas of the organisation, giving financial guidance on financial reporting, investments and all general finance matters
  • Manages short and long term financial forecasting for the Corporation in line with the Channel 4 strategy; 
  • Leads our internal and external reporting processes; 
  • Provides accounting, treasury and tax support to the group, and management accounting and analysis for a number of departments; 
  • Develops and maintains our financial systems; and 
  • Manages payments, royalties, expenses and revenue collections for the group
The Financial Control team is a team of 25 within the overall Finance department of approximately 50.

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE    
The Group Accountant role is intended to be broad and challenging, assisting with a range of internal and external reporting deliverables and analysis. The role reports to the Financial Reporting Manager, and plays a key part in supporting this team by:
  • Acting as a primary contact in the audit process and managing deliverables
  • Producing management reporting and commentary for users around the business
  • Reviewing Channel 4’s control environment and advising on areas for improvement
  • Supporting on ad hoc projects to create process improvements and efficiencies in Finance
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES    

Annual Report and external reporting
  • Prepare financial statements and disclosures included in the Channel 4 Annual Report
  • Act as day-to-day key audit contact, able to field routine queries and explain C4 accounting treatments in context of relevant standards
  • Manage preparation and detailed review of audit deliverables
  • Prepare complete statutory accounts for four subsidiary trading companies, including adjustments required from group accounts, commentary and disclosures
  • Prepare regular reporting for external stakeholders (DCMS/UKGI, whole of Government accounts, ONS and Ofcom)
Financial analysis
  • Review monthly financial results and management accounts in detail, liaising with the wider finance team to understand any key variances in YTD reporting and working closely with the Financial Reporting Manager and FP&A Team to understand the impact on full year results
  • Assist with preparation of monthly performance pack to Exec and Board, using dashboards, visuals and commentary to monitor KPIs and explain variances
Group accounting
  • Support the Financial Reporting Manager with the month end close process – including identifying and preparing adjustments required on consolidation of the Group’s accounts
  • Responsible for the Capex process including monthly accounting process, reviewing the FA register, ensuring the wider finance team are accounting for Capex correctly and preparing monthly Capex reports and reconciliations
  • Responsible for liaising with HR and outsourced payroll provider on monthly payroll postings, plus payroll related and pension balance sheet reconciliations ensuring discrepancies are investigated
  • Ownership of monthly management accounting, balance sheet recs, forecasting and budgeting for Finance department, providing commentary and analysis as business partner to the FD
Financial risk and controls
  • Work with other teams within Finance to identify and document risk areas and current mitigating controls in place
  • Proactively identify areas for improvement and advise the Finance team on implementation
  • Consolidate quarterly balance sheet review process ensuring all balance sheet accounts are reconciled, and outline key commentary and risks/opportunities for FD and other team members
Other
  • Prepare analysis and summaries to support technical accounting advice to the rest of the Finance team and wider business
  • Assist with maintaining the Group’s chart of accounts
  • Ad hoc support for budget and reforecasting cycles
  • Support Financial Reporting Manager with other project work as required during a period of transformation in the Finance team
ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

Essential
  • Qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent) – newly qualified to 2 years PQE
  • Strong knowledge of technical standards and ability to apply these in business context
  • Experience with external audit process, either in practice or as a key contact within Finance team
  • Strong Excel Skills 
  • Good PowerPoint skills and ability to prepare slides on a timely basis for ad hoc reporting 
Desirable
  • Media industry experience and enthusiasm
  • Experience with financial information systems e.g. Oracle GL and Hyperion
