RTÉ is Ireland's national public service media organisation. A leader in Irish media, RTÉ provides comprehensive, cost-effective, free-to-air multi-media services to the public in Ireland and interested audiences internationally. Since its inception, RTÉ has functioned in a highly competitive environment, where technology has been developing exponentially.  

RTÉ Technology are seeking to hire a Streaming Media Engineer to join our Product Development and Software Engineering team, to develop and support some the most high-profile online video and audio products in Ireland.

This Streaming Media Engineer will be responsible for ensuring the performance and reliability of online video and audio publishing and delivery, working in a multi-disciplinary team to develop and support high quality streaming media experiences used by millions of viewers around the world.

Main Responsibilities
  • Support the technical operations of the Online Video and Audio Platforms, with in-depth workflow, metadata and configuration knowledge, providing support to internal teams through developing standard operating procedures, debugging and issue resolution
  • Contribute to the design and architecture of video and audio media streaming systems, focusing on scalability and performance
  • Monitor and analyse end-to-end performance of the video delivery architecture to ensure optimal performance, resilience and reliability; and to drive continuous and iterative improvement of the quality and performance of live and on-demand video delivery
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including software and broadcast engineers, UI/UX designers, and product managers to ensure seamless integration of media streaming features
  • Plan, design and implement solutions and micro-services to support media publishing and monitoring workflows
  • Stay up-to-date with industry trends and emerging technologies related to media streaming and content delivery
  • Support QA and testing activities
  • Provide active monitoring support during high-profile live and on-demand events
  • A proven track record working in an engineering role, delivering and supporting distributed systems and public-facing applications in a production environment
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Java, or similar
  • Strong technical knowledge across multiple client platforms, including Mobile App, Web, Smart TVs, Set-top Boxes, Chromecast, and other OTT devices
  • Knowledge and experience working with video streaming protocols (HLS and MPEG-DASH), video and audio encoding, DRM, video analytics & QoE metrics, and in-stream video advertising

The successful candidate should possess a third level Engineering or Information Technology qualification and/or have experience in an Engineering discipline with a proven record of delivery.

They will be working on key technology systems and be able to demonstrate that they can work flexibly on an individual basis and as part of a team and should possess excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.

 They should be a self-starter open to change and new challenges and interested in the wider technology and broadcast industry developments.  

This position will be offered on a full-time ongoing permanent contract basis on the Broadcast Engineer Grade and salary scale from €50,180 to €63,737 gross per annum.

Hours are currently office hours but this may change subject to the organisation’s requirements. For system upgrade/implementations, planned weekend/out of office hours working will be required. Formal out of hours callout arrangements may be put in place to meet business requirements.
