Job Description

Full-Stack Software Developer, RTÉ

RTÉ (Raidió Teilifís Éireann) is Ireland's national public-service media organisation. A leader in Irish media, RTÉ provides comprehensive, cost-effective, free-to-air media services to the public in Ireland and interested audiences internationally. RTÉ Technology is responsible for leading and driving the implementation of the technology strategy, and for stimulating change and new ways of working across the organisation in order to empower and enable RTÉ to be an effective and efficient digital content and channels business.

RTÉ Technology are seeking to hire a Full-Stack Software Developer to join our Product Development and Software Engineering team, building some of the most high-profile online products in Ireland; including RTÉ.ie, RTÉ Player, and the RTÉ News app.

Reporting to the Systems & Development Manager, this is a critical role within the development team and the day-to-day duties are essential to ensuring RTÉ’s content is published and available in a timely and reliable manner across a suite of online products and services that hundreds of thousands of people use every day.

Collaborating with UX designers, content-creators, project-managers, testers and the wider development team, the candidate should have a strong appreciation of the importance of design, user-interfaces, and user-experience, and how they combine to produce an outstanding product.

Working with a wide range of colleagues in both technical and non-technical roles, the candidate must be a clear, calm and consistent communicator, and should be ready and comfortable being the person who solves problems - sometimes in situations where there is lots of pressure, and little time.

Main Responsibilities:
  • Creating web layouts and user interfaces from design concepts by using best HTML/CSS/Javascript practices across multiple platforms
  • Development and maintenance of large-scale web applications using Python/Django and PHP/Wordpress frameworks
  • Estimating development effort for assigned tasks and the development backlog
  • Routine daily maintenance of existing sites and application
  • Software testing, debugging, and refactoring
  • Substantial years as a Full-Stack Software Developer
  • Proficient in Python/Django and in a range of other web technologies, particularly HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, MySQL, and Solr
  • Experience developing and supporting large scale public-facing web applications
  • Experience of working in a fast-paced, fluid environment while ensuring the uptime and availability of services
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent problem-solving/analytical skills
  • Ability to quickly pick up new technologies and support a broad range of systems
We are looking for a person who will:
  • Put the user first and foremost - always
  • Thrive in situations of pressure where a calm and cool outlook is required
  • Work collaboratively and positively with all individuals and teams
  • Enjoy working in a fast and fluid environment with various personalities and outlooks
  • Be flexible, adaptable, receptive to feedback and direction, and who wants to learn
  • Manage time and tasks efficiently and effectively
  • Have excellent verbal and written communication skills, with sound instincts and judgement
  • Appreciate the chance to work in a flexible and progressive environment, where work-life balance is expected, enabled and supported
This role requires primarily business hours, however, there is a requirement to fulfill on-call duties outside of normal business hours and for which an allowance is payable.  A flexible and collaborative approach to work is therefore essential.

This appointment will be made on a permanent full-time contract basis at a salary range from €49,542 to €83,134 gross per annum.

Applicants are invited to submit a Curriculum Vitae together with a cover letter describing their suitability for the role (both must be attached as one document in the on-line application process).

Closing date for receipt of applications is 5pm on Monday 27th May 2024.

Any contract offer will be subject to the applicant’s legal permission to work in Ireland.

RTÉ is committed to diversity in its workforce and welcomes applications from people with diverse backgrounds.

Cuirfear fáilte roimh iarratais ó dhaoine go bhfuil dearcadh dearfach acu i leith na Gaeilge. Applications are welcome from people who have a positive outlook to Irish.
