About the Role

Working at the highest levels of technical complexity in both HD and UHD you will be responsible for jointly managing the Broadcast Engineering team at BT Sport. This is a key role in the BT Sport production hub, with opportunities to shape and build the future broadcast facilities for this high profile sports broadcaster. We are looking for an enthusiastic individual to lead our team of talented engineers as we grow the facility to meet the needs of our clients.

Main Duties

•      Line management of the broadcast engineering team (both staff and freelance)

•      Working closely with other technical departments, ensure that the engineering requirements of the BT Sport Managed Service are effectively delivered to meet the needs of production and broadcast operations under the terms of the Service Level Agreement (SLA)

•      Respond to all stakeholders in a positive, friendly, and proactive manner

•      Meet production requirements from BT Sport, their production partners, and external clients, by means of technical innovation and development

•      To ensure that technical faults are entered, tracked, and resolved through the Web Help Desk ticketing system, or that alternative ways of meeting production needs are identified and implemented with the minimum loss of time

•      To work with the management team to ensure budgets are met and to operate with due consideration for the commercial implications of any decision

•      To ensure the asset database in WHD is kept up to date and reviewed

•      To ensure that electronic equipment in Studios, MCR, CAR and associated technical areas is maintained, tested, and aligned to defined standards

•      To ensure sufficient spares are available on site to meet SLA and support requirements

•      Liaise with vendors and support partners to ensure project requirements and deadlines are met

•      Implement and embed health and safety culture across the engineering team and oversee the safe rigging, testing and operation of equipment as required

•      To ensure that technical documentation is maintained and shared as needed

•      Oversee AR systems for live shows

•      Attend regular client and management meetings to discuss the status of projects, staffing, and maintenance

•      Help to support Timeline’s HD and UHD Outside Broadcasts trucks on site as required

•      Oversee and implement Planned Engineering and Emergency Engineering Works (PEW/EEW)

•      Proactively review and improve communication and workflows between/across the Stratford engineering teams

•      Conduct staff appraisals and implement performance management processes

•      Communicate policies and relevant information to the teams

•      Plan and install small new projects, and develop existing systems and processes

•      At times you may be required to work at other Timeline sites, or on location

Knowledge, Skills & Experience

•      Broadcast engineering training and qualifications

•      Experience in a customer facing role with excellent service and communication skills

•      Good understanding of end-to-end production processes and the ‘live’ transmission chain in a broadcast environment

•      Experience in line management, with responsibility for a team of engineers on a shift pattern

•      Able to prioritise workloads and meet deadlines with the resources available

•      Able to work effectively as part of the management team and to represent Timeline at meetings with clients, staff, and supplier.

•      Comprehensive knowledge of health and safety legislation and ‘best practice’ as it applies to studio and outside broadcast environment

•      Project Management skills desirable

•      Good knowledge of IT and TCIP networking infrastructure

•      Significant experience of vision, sound, routing, communication, and computer systems

•      Able to document processes and procedures for use by a variety of end users

•      Excellent problem-solving skills

•      Previous experience with any of the following systems, equipment and processes will be highly regarded:

o      Sony Vision Mixers

o      Sony 2400 cameras

o      BNCS control system

o      GV Sirius routers, Kahuna vision mixers

o      Axon/GV/Evertz Glue

o      Evertz Multiviewers

o      Studio based Augmented reality (AR) systems

o      IP based networks, particularly SMPTE 2022-7

This role is on an 8/14 shift pattern (4 x 10.5 hour shifts per week on average)
