Graduate Master Control Room Engineer - Ealing

About the Role

Timeline are looking to train a Graduate MCR (Master Control Room) Engineer working predominantly within our Ealing Studios and Broadcast Centre operations in all areas of sound engineering. This is with a view to move into operations within Ealing.

          What is a Master Control Room?

In MCR we deal with the incoming and outgoing feeds from external clients.  As part of this we manipulate the video feeds, whether this is through changing the video format or through adjusting the audio channels.  In order to complete our job efficiently we communicate with various video providers from all across the globe, as well as Playout facilities such as Red Bee Media and ITV.  We work closely with other departments such as broadcast engineering, media systems engineering, sound and IT, as well as various members of our production teams.

Programme Length

This an 18 month’ development programme including secondments to various engineering departments, giving you the opportunity to expand your knowledge and develop practical skills for an exciting and rewarding career in master control room engineering. As a Graduate Trainee, you can expect to put all the theory you have learnt at university into practice within an innovative organisation that will put you at the forefront of new and exciting developments in broadcast technology, and prepare you for long-term career.

Development and Learning Expectations / Responsibilities

Learning and developing your skills whilst participating in our Graduate Programme will also involve supporting the effective operation of the master control room and workflows which involves the following:

• Prepping the incoming line feeds for each day
• Lining up video and audio with relevant parties
• Providing first line support to address technical faults in a timely manner
• Monitoring feeds
• Switching the feeds as per the MCR schedule
• Checking bookings
• Communicating with all relevant parties (production galleries, Technical Producers at outside broadcasts, transmission playout, Broadcast Engineering) in a clear, efficient and friendly manner
• Escalating issues to line managers, broadcast engineering, traffic, and ingest when and where appropriate
• Supporting the operation by preparing operational instructions and communicating changes

Training

You will hit the ground running, working directly alongside our skilled engineers, getting hands-on experience operationally supporting transmission, ingest, traffic, outside broadcasts and studio productions for our major broadcast clients. After a full induction, we will also offer you a mix of internal and external training, and you will have access to your own mentor to support your career development.

About You

We don’t need you to have worked in a broadcasting or studio environment before but there are some key requirements:

• Logic, curiosity and exceptional reasoning skills are essential in a master control environment so you should have a passion for technology and a talent for problem solving
• We require a knowledge of IT and networking
• Everyone in the team has to deal directly with our clients, so strong written and verbal communication skills are required, as well as confidence in dealing with people at a range of different levels.
• The ability to work well in a team environment is essential
• To be eligible, you should have a strong academic record and a degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) discipline

Please note that this is a shift-based role and involves unsociable hours and weekend work.
