Job Description

Job Title: Online Systems Engineer
Department: Broadcast Technology
Reports to: Online Engineering Manager


The Technology Department is responsible for the functions of IT strategy and support, Research and Development, Broadcast Technology and Operations.


Working with technology vendors and internal teams to design and deliver new technical projects for Channel 4’s online platforms – All4 and third-party OTT services, and maintaining existing online video systems and services.

  • Work with technical leads, internal product stakeholders and external suppliers to ensure new requirements are understood and correctly implemented
  • Developing technical solutions to new requirements and projects
  • Addressing issues arising on existing services before or after go-live, identify root causes and path to fix
  • Assess and provide feedback on proposed solution designs
  • Align internal technology resources with external deployment timelines to ensure on time delivery
  • Develop and implement test plans and plans for go live for new services
  • Identify risks and mitigating actions for project risks and issues
  • Ensure open and transparent communication to allow for timely informed decision making
  • Produce clear and concise documentation, and ensuring suitable documentation is provided by all vendors and partners.

Technical and Professional Skills Essential
  • Online/OTT video systems – VOD and live/simulcast
  • Existing and emerging compression formats e.g. AVC/HEVC/VVC, knowledge of encoding software tools, quality vs. bitrate
  • Streaming and packaging formats e.g. DASH, HLS
  • DRM license services
  • Public cloud infrastructure e.g. AWS
  • Understanding of workflow design for VOD systems
  • Excellent reporting, writing and communication skills
  • Experience with tools such as Jira and Confluence for issue and task tracking

  • Strong communication skills and a personable manner
  • Experience of working with senior stakeholders
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a large programme delivery team
  • Ability to work in a complex technology environment with challenging deadlines
