We’ve got an amazing opportunity to join our team in Salford and work on our BBC World Service co-production with American Public Media’s Marketplace. Marketplace shows reach close to 13 million listeners in the United States each week, in addition to audiences for successful podcasts such as Make Me Smart.
Our team will be responsible for producing and presenting the highly successful Marketplace Morning Report (global edition) from the BBC World Service. As the sun rises over the east coast of the United States at 0551 ET (1051 in London), we bring listeners an international mix of business stories from across the globe, tapping into the BBC's extensive network of reporters and correspondents, and introducing voices of entrepreneurs, small business owners and experts. We also make Marketplace Global Update for listeners in Asia.
Our journalists provide stories, reports, ideas and treatments for Marketplace, the award-winning daily US business news show presented by Kai Ryssdal, as well as for Marketplace Tech and a range of APM podcasts. The journalism and expertise underpinning the stories and issues will be strong, though our aim is to wear that knowledge lightly, to help audiences understand the economic world and what big macro-economic changes mean for everyday lives and wallets (or pocket books!). We want to get voices that are as close to the heart of a story as possible, and you’ll play an important role in finding new voices.
This team will be a crucial part of the new Money and Work Team in Salford and will aim to funnel the best of the BBC’s Money and Work journalism to our partners at Marketplace. The SJTM will work with the Senior Presenter (MMR host) and 2 Senior Journalists to produce the best possible content. It’s a full-time role and will require a flexible approach as it involves communication and close collaboration across time zones, with teams in New York, Los Angeles, Salford and BBC bureaux across the globe. We’re also aiming to travel and report from around Europe so experience of planning and producing outside broadcasts, and multi-platform gathering and reporting on the ground would be an advantage.

We need a great journalist who really understands Business and Economics and how to make complex issues accessible for a non-specialist audience. The role requires a superb communicator who can develop a close and effective relationship with our partners in New York and Los Angeles, to produce some brilliant journalism that works for a US audience. Reporting the world, the brief is wide and the scope is huge. We want to help everyday people understand how the economic world around them works, why that matters, and how it will affect their lives. It’s a job for a consummate radio and podcast producer who understands how to use real people, conversations and context to tell powerful stories which really connect with the audience. We're looking to expand our ambition to produce digital content, including video, as well.
