Job Description


This senior position involves driving the ITV News newsgathering operation on a daily basis, deciding coverage priorities and managing news teams in all our regional bureaus.  It is a role based out of the Midlands or the North of England.


  • Multi-skilled with the ability to work across input, output and digital platforms
  • Decide and shape the day’s news agenda through conversations with all ITV News’ regional bureaus
  • Commission and pursue stories
  • Secure exclusive and distinctive editorial content
  • Brief and deploy reporters, correspondents, producers and crews
  • Present daily editorial plans to programme editors and senior management
  • Drive and suggest digital contributions for stories 
  • Make informed legal and health and safety judgements
  • Manage resources to ensure all stories are adequately covered
  • Plan and manage special projects as requested
  • Undertake work in the field alongside reporters and crews, both home and abroad
  • Manage daily relations with the ITV regional newsrooms, international partners and promote One ITV News
  • Ensure ITV News coverage reflects and showcases a diverse range of opinions, matters and communities and champions diversity

  • A good understanding of all news technologies used in the field and to embrace new technologies – self-editing, self-shooting and an ability to publish on digital platforms are desirable  
  • Strong decision making and leadership skills
  • Excellent people management skills and supervisory experience
  • Strong editorial judgement to prioritise tasks and story coverage
  • The ability to manage a wide range of tasks under pressure
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Strong experience of breaking news and large-scale broadcast
  • Full experience of producing and news editing confidently in the field
  • Excellent organisation skills
  • Knowledge of satellites, newsgathering infrastructure and internet-based technology
  • Good knowledge of Ofcom regulations and the ITN compliance manual
  • A full, clean UK driving licence
  • Some knowledge of how to edit, shoot and populate digital platforms is preferable but not required
  • Awareness of Health and Safety requirements
  • Awareness and understanding of the financial implications of all decision-making
  • An understanding of personal responsibility for cross-company co-operation within both ITN and ITV
  • Proven ability and experience of planning desks
  • Good understanding of output – package elements, structure and treatments
