BBC Content encompasses all of the BBC's network TV and Radio output.  Suzy Klein our new Head of Arts and Classical Music, is looking to build on our world-class arts and music offering and is recruiting a senior arts voice to join her commissioning team to work across the full range of arts and classical music disciplines. The team are making changes that will enable us to expand the reach of our Arts and Music programming to ensure the widest possible audience can access distinctive, world-beating content across our services.

We’re creating a new arts and classical music strategy in TV, to bring specialist depth, modern storytelling and enhanced ambition to our commissioning. And we're looking for a brilliant new commissioner to help us deliver it.

This is an outstanding opportunity for a true expert in the field of Arts and Classical Music Television or passionate arts enthusiast to join the BBC as Commissioning Editor, Arts and Classical. You will bring a track record of success, developing 'best in class' ideas, working with leading programme-makers and nurturing new talent (on and off-screen). 

Main Responsibilities

You will work closely with Suzy Klein, Head of Arts & Classical Music, to deliver the commissioning strategy, building and maintaining relationships with the supplier base to generate, develop and deliver the best ideas. As a natural collaborator, you will be part a commissioning team working together across single films, box sets, landmark series and performance bringing your instinct, insights and creative judgements to make the very best arts and music television.

Are you the right candidate?

You will be able to demonstrate your achievements in identifying excellence and driving quality in commissions.  Audiences are at the heart of everything we do so you need to have a deep understanding of changing audience consumption patterns (particularly on VOD and SVOD platforms) and show evidence of creating diverse content and developing new on-screen talent.

We are looking for:

  • An outstanding track-record for delivering programmes and devising returning brands with broad audience appeal across major channels or platforms, at SP, EP or Head of Development level
  • Demonstrable expertise around arts and culture, either broadly or with a particular specialism. We will also consider candidates with a strong track-record in factual TV (history, docs, science, popular factual) but  with a clear passion for the arts. 
  • Outstanding communication skills - able to inspire suppliers, formulate and deliver a clear brief to producers, and to communicate effectively with stakeholders and managers. 
  • Significant experience and knowledge of managing budgets.
  • Sound editorial judgment coupled with the ability to devise and develop new ideas and formats, and foster creativity in others. 
  • A sound knowledge of the best suppliers across the UK.
  • Evidence of a commitment to creating diverse content, highlighting the different voices and perspectives of audiences across the country, championing the best new voices both on and offscreen
